After 15 years as Postmaster of the Warrens Post Office, Michael Shepherd will be stepping down.
Shepherd will retire Dec. 31, ending a career in the postal service that lasted over three decades.
“I’ve been in the postal service a little over 31 years, and I think it’s just time,” Shepherd said of his retirement.
Shepherd, 61, grew up in San Diego before moving to West Salem. In 1979, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a degree in business. He began his postal service career as a mail carrier in West Salem, and later served as a carrier and supervisor in La Crosse for nine years.
As times have continued to change, Shepherd has seen a lot of new technology within the United States Post Office, and he isn’t finding change as enjoyable as he used to.
“My job has always been enjoyable, but we are to the point now that there is so much change with technology and change is coming pretty fast,” Shepherd said. “I am finding it a little harder to adjust to changes.”
Shepherd and his wife, Judi, are also ready to escape the Wisconsin winters, and will be leaving for Arizona to spend the winter shortly after his retirement.
An open house for Shepherd will be held on Sunday, Dec. 30 at The Bog restaurant in Warrens from 2 to 5 p.m., and is open to the community.
Shepherd doesn’t think he will miss the cold winters and rapidly advancing technology, but he says that he will miss the people, which was for him the best part of his job.
“People are the best part of this job,” Shepherd said. “To see their kids grow up and the town change and grow over the years, and to see the Cranberry Fest come to town every year really makes it enjoyable,” he said.
