The old weight room at Tomah High School may be transformed into office space for administrative staff. Members of the Tomah School District’s Facilities Committee discussed the issue during their meeting Wednesday at the Robert Kupper Learning Center.

School district Business Manager Greg Gaarder distributed rough sketches outlining options for transforming the old weight room into office space for the principal, two assistant principals, activities director and their support staffs.

The room became vacant once construction of a new fitness center was completed last fall.

“There’s not a whole lot of demolition that would need to take place,” Gaarder said. “It would be a matter of just putting up walls.”

Gaarder had no cost estimate for the move. The old weight room is located under the wrestling loft next to the main high school gymnasium.

Moving the offices would be part of a larger plan to relocate the front entrance of the high school from Lincoln Avenue to the north parking lot.

In other business, Gaarder said the cold and snowy winter and rising energy prices are impacting the budget.

“Utilities are up, gas for buses is up and snowplowing is up,” Gaarder said.

" It surprising me how negative many of the people in this community are, and how concerned we are about sports. Looking at the school in an area is a great way to judge the community. It is funny how we worry about more sports and room for more sports; but teachers are sharing rooms. Where is the priority, education or sports? Finally many people are doing a great job at cutting up on the staff and administration in our schools; the comments on the Tomah Journal blogs does enough cutting up for my taste. If you work in the schools keep working hard there are many people out here that appreciate your work. "

" WHY NOT JUST KEEP WEIGHT ROOM AS IT IS. MAYBE IT CAN BE USED FOR ANOTHER SPORT.. THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF CAN STAY WERE THERE AT.
SPEND, SPEND THAT ALL THE SCHOOL DISTICT'S CAN THINK ABOUT LATELY. "

" WHY NOT USE THAT SPACE FOR A NEW TRAINERS ROOM?
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN THE TRAINERS ROOM, WHEN THERE IS ABOUT 4+ KIDS IN THERE, PLUS THE TRAINER TRYING TO CARE FOR THEM?? "
