Published - Sunday, March 23, 2008 6th grade track and field on school board agenda Sixth-graders could participate in track & field at Tomah Middle School as early as this month if the Tomah School Board gives its approval. Board members will consider the issue Thursday when they meet at LaGrange Elementary School starting at 7:30 p.m. The district’s Activities Review Committee last month recommended that sixth-graders be eligible to compete in boys and girls track & field and boys and girls golf, which competes in the fall. If the board approves, sixth-graders can join the track & field program in time for the first practice March 24. The first meet is April 10 at the Sparta Quadrangular. Tomah High School boys track & field coach Eric Eswein told the committee Feb. 25 there would be no cost to the district because no additional coaches or transportation would be required. Sixth-graders are allowed to compete in most other middle school sports. In other business, the board will announce the members of an ad-hoc committee to study the creation of a 4-year-old kindergarten in Tomah. The committee will consist of 14 members, including two school board members, seven members appointed by the board and five at-large members. The board has discussed the issue since October but is unlikely to implement a 4-year-old kindergarten in time for the 2008-09 school year. Tomah is now in the minority of districts that don’t offer 4-year-old kindergarten. Over 60 percent of Wisconsin’s districts offer the program, which became eligible for state aid in 1984. Other agenda items include: *Request to continue single-sex math classes at the middle school. *Update on the 2008-09 budget. *Announcement of the 2008 valedictorian and salutatorian. *Request to participate in the Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey. *Open enrollment applications. *Projected elementary enrollments and classroom assignments. *Appointment of board members to hand out diplomas at the high school graduation ceremony. *Presentation of high school survey results from the leadership development class. Prior to the regular meeting, the Finance Committee will meet a 6:45 p.m., and the Personnel Committee will meet at 7:15 p.m.
