Sixth-graders could participate in track & field at Tomah Middle School as early as this month if the Tomah School Board gives its approval.

Board members will consider the issue Thursday when they meet at LaGrange Elementary School starting at 7:30 p.m.

The district’s Activities Review Committee last month recommended that sixth-graders be eligible to compete in boys and girls track & field and boys and girls golf, which competes in the fall.

If the board approves, sixth-graders can join the track & field program in time for the first practice March 24. The first meet is April 10 at the Sparta Quadrangular.

Tomah High School boys track & field coach Eric Eswein told the committee Feb. 25 there would be no cost to the district because no additional coaches or transportation would be required. Sixth-graders are allowed to compete in most other middle school sports.

In other business, the board will announce the members of an ad-hoc committee to study the creation of a 4-year-old kindergarten in Tomah. The committee will consist of 14 members, including two school board members, seven members appointed by the board and five at-large members.

The board has discussed the issue since October but is unlikely to implement a 4-year-old kindergarten in time for the 2008-09 school year. Tomah is now in the minority of districts that don’t offer 4-year-old kindergarten. Over 60 percent of Wisconsin’s districts offer the program, which became eligible for state aid in 1984.

Other agenda items include:

*Request to continue single-sex math classes at the middle school.

*Update on the 2008-09 budget.

*Announcement of the 2008 valedictorian and salutatorian.

*Request to participate in the Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

*Open enrollment applications.

*Projected elementary enrollments and classroom assignments.

*Appointment of board members to hand out diplomas at the high school graduation ceremony.

*Presentation of high school survey results from the leadership development class.

Prior to the regular meeting, the Finance Committee will meet a 6:45 p.m., and the Personnel Committee will meet at 7:15 p.m.

" OK...Sorry! I totally understand, now. I agree that SOME games are boring. However, my son's love soccer. But they do both play the majority of the time, makes it hard for me to find THEIR games boring! "

" You miss my point. I didn't say that soccer wasn't a sport that didn't take alot of hard work and stamina. I just said that it was boring to watch. And for some kids it is boring to play. My two boys both played for a couple of years and were decent enough players. But they both quit because they said it was boring and all they ever did was run back and forth with very few shots on goal. One of the high school games that I attended this year had a total of 8 shots on goal for over 40 minutes of play. Talk about boring. My point is that it isn't a sport with enough interest for most spectators. It will never compete with American football. "

" It honestly has nothing to do with which sport is boring...maybe your son/daughter should get off the couch and run as hard as these kids do. These kids work hard and they have a lot of fun doing it. Way to go last years 6th graders....two teams that went undefeated all year! Can't wait for another great season. P.S. Congrats Mark! You'll do a great job, just look at the boys that you are coaching! "

" I totally agree with "most" of the posts on here. The sooner a student has the opportunity to participate in a sport the more likely they are to continue that sport into high school. Why is it that parents pay top dollar for our kids to play sports put on by the city? In my opinion, I would have no problem dishing out the $75 to the school districts Soccer Program. I never miss a game, but for those parents that have to work weekends...a ride would be provided...the bus. Why do we pay $75 for baseball? This year, 6th graders have to travel to LaCrosse once a week just to find a team to play. Sorry, love sports, but this is ridiculus. Maybe the word needs to get out more if someone needs support...Mike Who? "

" Ask yourself this. Why isn't soccer catching on in the US? Oh, sure at the younger level it seems to be doing OK (it actually has been for quite a few years.) But I attribute that more to parents taking advantage of the "babysitting" service that youth activities seem to provide. Why doesn't that carry over to the upper levels? I can tell you why.....Soccer is BORING!!!!!!

" Do you even know what you are talking about? That isn't even close to what I was referencing. What my comment was about was that it takes talent to score in hockey, and it was making a joke about soccer. It had nothing to do with how many points scored to how good of an athlete you are. Some of the best athletes in the world (linebackers, point gaurds, etc.) don't score points and that is their job. Even soccer players are good athletes and don't score.

Think before you speak. "

" we have been trying to add soccer at the middle
school, that was some of the lack of support
Mike was talking about "

" tomah must have lost an amazing amount of athlete's then. i love how you define an athlete by how many points are scored. "

" Is soccer even a sport??? I would rather watch grass grow or paint dry. BORING !!!!!! "

17-12 wrote on Mar 19, 2008 9:56 PM:

" Speaking of soccer, why aren't the scores of games like 17-12? I mean, the goal is the size of a two car garage...! Hockey scores more goals then soccer and there is a goaly loaded with pads in front of that net.
Athlete = hockey player.

Re: Soccer ?? and Why... wrote on Mar 19, 2008 4:14 PM:

" I totally agree with both of you, I think any middle schooler should be able to play any sport, they are part of the middle school, and should be able to participate in any sport offered to the school. Which brings me to my next point, I think that soccer should be offered at the Middle school...but you know how the schoolboard is...MONEY MONEY MONEY!!
Oh, the other thing I have a question about...I nor my sister have been in school for a while, so I've been out of the loop for a while. What is this "CONTINUE to have single-sex math classes"??? What is that all about? Sounds kinda dumb to me. Is this making a difference in grades or something? I made it thru school just fine with boys and girls in the same class, in EVERY Class. If they are going to segregate any class it should be gym class! "

Soccer ?? wrote on Mar 19, 2008 9:45 AM:

" How about Soccer? There are 450 kids that play in the Tomah Youth Soccer Assocation each year yet they dont have school soccer until High School? "

Why wrote on Mar 17, 2008 8:56 PM:

" Why not let 6th graders participate in all sports if they are better than the 7th graders?
Why is track different than any other sport. "
