Adoption: Benefit to aid in family's legal costs

Archie and Kimberly Eckelberg were asked to take in three young girls in 2004. After several court battles, their adoptions became legal on Feb. 27, 2008.

Because of the extraordinary circumstances, however, the Eckelberg’s accumulated large lawyer fees during the process.

“The biological parents didn’t want to release their parental rights, but they didn’t want to be parents,” Kimberly Eckelberg said. “After a two-year battle, we have had success.”

A benefit will be held on April 5 at the Bible Evangelical Free Church at 625 W. Veterans Street to help the Eckelberg’s recover from the high lawyer costs. The benefit will last from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will include a spaghetti dinner, bake sale, silent auction, raffles and vendors, Eckelberg said.

The Eckelberg’s also have a daughter and son ages 23 and 19. In 2004, they were contacted by the grandmother of the three girls who was looking for a new home for them. The girls came to Tomah from Florida in December of 2004, and in May of 2005, the Eckelberg’s were granted guardianship of Kellee, who is now five years old, Asha, 4, and Bethany, 3.

The case went all the way to the Wisconsin Supreme Court before the adoption was officially made legal last month.

“This wasn’t something we were searching to do,” Eckelberg said. “It just happened, and it has blessed our lives in ways we never thought possible.”

" I did not mean to sound so negative, but the family must have known how expensive it would be. I hope that the children do have a good life and and that this family has many good memories. "

" I am replying to the what if God is real comments because we have starvation, incest comment (I have to be honest I did not know what the other word was).

There is a God - He gives life, air to breathe each day, green grass to walk on, and birds to sing. He is a perfect God but we are not perfect people. He wants us to follow His word and do His will but you need to remember that we are human and we will make the mistakes while doing God's plan. No one will ever be as perfect as the man who died for you!

As for the incest situations - the person who made that bad choice should be held responsible, it was their bad choice not a choice that God would have wanted him/her to make.
As for the starvation - I have one question;
What are you doing to help out those people who are starving in your community and through out the world?
God would want us to help them and their families. He would want you to donate food & money to the Families First. Give to the salvation army, pay for someones bread & milk at the local market even buy someone a coffee. Sponsor a family or a child each month. That is what God would want - do GOOD things.
We could all make those choices.

Do you believe that God is real and died for you? Are willing to follow His plan and work on doing His will while making His world a better place? Give to yourself and others in your community a chance for a healthier God driven life?

I choose each day to do His will (some days I stink and others I shine) but I know God will forgive me my mistakes and praise me someday for the good I have done in heaven.

What will you choose to do each day?

I pray that you seek God's plan and join myself in making this world a BETTER place and join me in heaven someday.

" It amazes me how something so positive can bring out such unhappy emotions. I respect all of your thoughts; I also know that sometimes the whole story is worth hearing in order for everyone to understand how this is a "blessing to a family" and not a " burden to the community"
The State of Florida and the State of Wisconsin have systems in place to help children and their new families (foster care, etc).In my opinion both states failed their own system's and this family and that is why we are asking friends and family to join us in this celebration.
For me it was nice to see something positive happening in our area verses the stories of others negative behaviors.
Everyone should look for the blessings that God gives us each day it may allow you to understand His power and glory and why our family sees these children as a gift from God.

The Question Is.... wrote on Apr 4, 2008 10:10 PM:

" Who do you think paid the birth-parents' legal fees to take this case 3 years to finalize? I understand it to be the State of Wisconsin, so therefore you and I the taxpayers! You know the old saying, the criminals (or criminal parents) have all the rights. Unfortunately the system is the problem. Now the community has the opportunity to make it right! "

" Good cause, but not worth my money. I have better things to pay for. Other peoples money problems isn't my problem. "

" I think the local community should know what firm represented the family, then people can contact the lawyers and urge a revised version of the legal fees. Therefore, the law firm is recognized as not only possessing quality lawyers but also as a company that is willing to work with potential clients who may not be able to absorb high fees. It's a win-win situation for the business as well as the family. "

" Why would you care it's not costing you anything.

As the other one said if you haven't anything good to say then don't say anything

The thought that these people got involved to save 3 kids and they actually won in Wi says a lot and I WILL DONATE TO THIS JUST CAUSE "

" Wow! They are not asking Tomah to pay for their bills, their Church is holding a benefit for them. They did not come knocking on your door holding a coffee can, begging for money. Have you ever heard the saying, "If you have nothing positive to say, say nothing at all"? If this benefit is a problem for you, don't attend.

My opinion... God Bless You for everything that you have done and are doing to better these little girls. The world needs more people like you! "

unbeliever wrote on Apr 3, 2008 11:38 AM:

" "It just happened" that you fought for three years, all the way to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, to adopt three children whose birth parents did not want to release perantal rights? Sounds to me like you had plenty of time to think about this. Now you want the people in Tomah to help you pay your bills? "

Loving Mother wrote on Apr 3, 2008 6:49 AM:

" Congratulations to you and to your entire family, adoption process is not easy on anyone. Not finacially and definitely not for the young children involved. I have a sister who was adopted we have had her since she was two days old and I am thankful that we have her she is in a better place now and better taken care of than if she would have stayed with her biological parents.

May god bless you and those girls and may they grow up to be good citizens and always know that they are loved and wanted by you. "

" Anyone who knows the Eckelbergs and/or has had the privilege of meeting the 3 little girls will vouch for the entire family in saying that the past 3+ years have been truly a blessing. No one anticipated the emotionally exhausting process of adopting the girls, but now that it's over, everyone gets to sit back and watch the family grow together. "

" I am glad to hear your battle over the rights of the children is over. But adoption in this country is very expensive, anybody who has tried or looked into adoption knows that. Good luck with the benefit. But you knew what you were getting into when you started. "

" To Archie & Kim - God does everything for a reason and these children were put into a wonderful & loving home. There are few people who would not have fought as long & as hard for these children as you did. Thank You. Now all three will know what it is to be truly loved. God Bless You and your entire family.
