Cracked court sends tennis team on the road

The Tomah High School boys tennis team has a new designation in 2008: road warriors.

A long crack on Tomah’s hard plastic tennis courts forced Tomah’s Tuesday Mississippi Valley Conference opener to be moved from Tomah to Onalaska.

It’s possible that Tomah’s four other home dates against Viroqua, Holmen, Mauston and Sparta will also become road matches. Tomah School District Activities Director said today’s (Thursday’s) Viroqua match will definitely be on the road, but no decision has been made about the Holmen, Mauston and Sparta matches.

“We’ll take it day by day,” Curran said. “If we get some warm weather, and if the crack can be repaired, we’ll try to keep the games in Tomah. I don’t want to call another activities director and switch the game from Tomah and then switch it back.”

Tomah coach Brent Nicol said a season of all road matches wouldn’t have a significant impact.

“It won’t affect the team that much,” Tomah coach Brent Nicol said. “There are some guys who are disappointed that they won’t be able to play in front of the home crowd, but we will get to play on a much better playing surface.”

" If this was a sport that involved more students, would this even be an issue? Since these courts have be in poor shape for a few seasons now, why was it not replaced with the grant that the school recieved for the Py Ed program? Certanly it gets more use by more people than the bicycles that were purchased. "

" Why doesn't the Tomah Tennis parents fundraise for new courts? Maybe they can find a company or individual willing to donate enough money and possibly get naming rights. This way the tax payers (KING) can't complain about the new courts and the school district and community can be proud of something!! "

" Sorry folks, financial times are tight! I understand that tennis is important to many people, but the money can be spent better else where. I don't want to pay any additional form of tax. The economy is bottoming out, gas and food prices are through the roof, many roads in Tomah are in dis-repair, property taxes are outrageous and people are moaning about bad tennis courts?! Times are tough, and the necessities are getting tough to afford, wants and extras like tennis courts can be put on hold for awhile! "

" Tomah needs a new tennis court way more than a mascot on the gym floor "

Just a thought.. wrote on Apr 17, 2008 2:24 PM:

" Why don't they take the money they are planning to spend on putting the new mascot on the gym floor and use it for a higher priority like the tennis courts. We haven't had a mascot on the gym floor in years..why do we need one RIGHT NOW! I think its something that can wait until other more important things are taken care off. I know people are excited about the new mascot and want to show it off, but I think building new and safer tennis courts are a priority. They spent all that money on the new entry way from the parking lot, and whatever else but they keep ignoring the courts...does safety not concern them, the tennis team aren't the only ones that use those courts. The gym classes and also the public uses them. "

Middle school concern wrote on Apr 17, 2008 12:32 PM:

" The limited number of courts also affects the practice and playing time of the tennis players. The middle school kids only average about 45 min-1 hour of practice time because they leave the court for the high schoolers. "

" The school board like running the show they never asked the city to help them with anything. Beside the school distant get plenty of money to build tennis courts. As far as the city goes for public tennis courts that something that should be brought to the city Park and Rec director. good luck with that one. "

Tomah Tennis Alum wrote on Apr 17, 2008 9:58 AM:

" It is truly a shame that the Tomah School District as well as the city of Tomah have made this issue such a low priority over the last several years. Not only should a town the size of Tomah have a number of courts available in parks and public facilities, the School District has repeatedly ignored the signs of the Tomah Tennis Program and the concerned users of the tennis courts. Perhaps nice at one time, the courts not only are embarrassment to Tomah athletes to play on, numerous scars can attest to the fact of how dangerous the plastic surface is. With interest in participation up steadily year after year in this program, the school board shouldn't have to look too far to find the right answer. Who knows, maybe the city could step up to the plate and do something for it's children and kick in a few bucks...Now is the time people, now is the time. "

another tennis fan wrote on Apr 17, 2008 8:51 AM:

" there has been talk of needing new courts for at least 4 years. My child has played on these courts they are slippery when damp. There was talk in the MVC already last year from the other MVC schools reguarding the condition and danger of tomah's courts. The safty of the athletes should be a priority. I feel bad for the players. Tennis nubers have been steadily increasing and so has fan support only now to possibly have no home games. I wish the team the best of luck no matter where they play. I feel for the parents, grandparents and friends who now may be unable to see the team as much as they could have "

" Who is going to pay for the new tennis courts? The school distant should have built the tennis courts to code the first time. Now were going to hear we need tennis courts for our high school. Give me a break! "

Tennis Fan wrote on Apr 16, 2008 7:03 PM:

" I am very disappointed in both the School District for not repairing the Court and the City for not providing any tennis courts. While there is a court at 801 housing and 2 at the VA and there are the High School Courts, none are in good condition and none are maintained by the City. The High School courts are full of deadspots and are dangerous to play on when even slightly wet. Its time the city stepped up and provided a decent tennis court to play on in this City.

I believe every team deserves to play before their own parents, friends and supporters. It is ridiculous that not one match can be played at home. Now the nearest match supporters can see the Tomah tennis team play at will be in Sparta. The story is remarkable in that not one word was said about the schools attempt to fix the Courts. "
