The Tomah School Board’s Facilities Committee will review a $252,000 proposal to build seven tennis courts at LaGrange Elementary School when it meets Wednesday at the school district office.

The courts would provide a competition venue for the Tomah High School and Tomah Middle School tennis teams.

Six courts already exist at the high school, but the plastic waffle-board surface installed 12 years ago has generated complaints because of poor surface conditions. One of the courts recently cracked and forced the Tomah boys tennis team to play all its remaining matches on the road.

If approved, the proposal will go before the full school board May 15.

The committee also review the cost of rebuilding the courts at the high school. Business Manager Greg Gaarder said it would be at least $80,000 more expensive to build the courts at the high school because of poor soil conditions.

Other projects to be reviewed:

u High school and middle gymnasium floor refinishing.

u Tomah High School office renovation.

u Upgrade of the football practice field at the high school.

u Proposed roof replacement and maintenance plan.

u Proposal for hard-surface maintenance plan.

u Signage at Tomah Middle School.

u Review of 2007-08 and 2008-09 construction projects.

" We live in more afflunece then our parents did and they paid the taxes so that all these facilities, inlcuding tennis courts, were built and maintained. You are simply selfish and self righteous. "

" Four car garage, boat, snowmobiles...Seriously, you should recognize the fact that you know nothing about me. Times are tight for EVERYONE, and tennis courts are a WANT, not a need. Think about it, for yourself, would it be proper to have the boat, snowmobile, ATV, and the second vacation home, if you didn't have the money to maintain your already crumbling home or you were unable to put food on your table? "

" Lets try to rememeber that the previous genaration was able to find the money to fund extra curricilar activities. It was their moral duty and they did it.You now don't want to so you can maintain your four car garage and boat and snow mobiles etc...... "

" Let's please try to remember that he "typical" family is financially stretched to the limit. Money is tight during these times, and we have people with the fortitude to believe that, in the grand scheme, freakin' tennis courts are more worthy than just about anything else! "

" I say build the courts on the motel owners property that house our military. After all the school district pays no property tax but the motel owner do. In this way the military can use the courts when the kids are not. This would give recreation for the troops and another good reason not to build any thing at the Fort. "

" What about the property that the school district owns west on Hwy ET, the open fields near the new housing development. Lots of room for tennis, soccer, softball, EVERYTHING in one place. Lets start planning for the future instead of hodge podging for the present!!! "

" $80,000 more because of Soil conditions?? Yea right. We just need to justify moving them to where the ad and the board wants them. What soil conditions? Was there a gas station in the location years back and have to remove all the dirt and replace it?? Maybe all you so called educated people at THS and the board think your above us but we can still reach up and pull the wool back away from our eye's. Where are all the middle schoolers going to practice when you get rid of the existing courts. WHo is going to take them to practices at La Grange and if bussed then it will be more expense. Will you have to expand parking at la grange if you have softball and tennis going at the same time. People will have to park all the way to Farm Supply. "

Sports rule over educational costs more tax dollars please wrote on May 6, 2008 9:05 AM:

" When is the spending going to quit? New tennis courts needed, old ones designed on poor ground. $252,000 would go a long way for educational purposes, like teacher salaries, books, you know those things our children really need for an education. Instead they want to spend it on tennis courts. We are in a recession guys, but I guess no one on the board of education gets it. We don't have the money to give to you anymore. When is our government going to quit spending our hard earned money? We need to pay for the high fuel costs ( which I'm sure the school buildings are having those same high fuel costs, not to mention fuel costs for running their school buses), and food price increases. Why not spend the $252,000 on fuel costs for the already built school buildings and bus fuel costs? If this were a private company and the CEO had to decide, fuel for heat or air conditioning or new tennis courts, what would I choose? Any business would be bankrupt because of the foolish choices they were making on spending hard earned dollars. Why don't the school board officials and government officials just drive down Superior Avenue with the windows open and throw money out the windows? It would do more good for the people finding it and would be spent better. P______ away our tax dollars to no end. We're sick and tired of voting in new candidates and the same old things happen over and over again, more spending. Tighten up your belts and show some guts to do the job that you were voted in for. Can you spell recession? "
