Tomah pro wins fishing league opener

Dan McGarry opened the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division series in a big way last weekend.

McGarry, a pro from Tomah, Wis., pocketed $3,667 for first place, plus an additional $647 in Ranger bonus money for winning the Boater Division in the BFL Great Lakes Division opener in La Crosse on Saturday.

McGarry caught a five-fish limit totaling 19 pounds, 10 ounces.

Jason Slagstad of Sarona, Wis., was runner-up with five bass weighing 18 pounds 14 ounces and won $2,157. Jesse Wolfe of Nelson, Wis., picked up $1,439 with five fish weighing 18 pounds 11 ounces.

Jeff Benson of Holmen, Wis, and La Crosse’s Brian Christianson rounded out the top five in the Boater Division. Benson’s five bass weighed 18-0, while Christianson also limited out for 18-01. Benson won $1,007. Christianson earned $863.\

Jared Greninger of Yorkville, Ill., topped the Co-Angler Division with five fish weighing 17 pounds and won $2,157. Sam Ritter of Prairie du Chien, Wis., was the only La Crosse area angler fishing in the top five. Ritter also caught five bass, but they weighed 15 pounds. Ritter shared fourth place and won $467.
