Matt Ferry set a meet record in the triple jump and nearly led the Tomah High School boys track & field team to a victory at the May 5 Baraboo Freshman/Sophomore Track & Field Invitational.

Ferry, a sophomore, hit a record jump of 41 feet, 2 1/2 inches and won the event by nearly six feet. He also pulled out a narrow victory in the 100-meter dash. His winning time was 11.6 seconds, just .3 seconds shy of the meet record.

Kyle Price was Tomah’s other first-place finisher. He won the shot put in 45-8 1/2. He was one of just two throwers to exceed 40 feet.

Tomah scored points in every event except the discus and 200-meter dash. The Timberwolves placed second in three of the four relay races.

Team scores: Baraboo 143.33, Tomah 138, Monona Grove 109.5, Reedsburg 80, Portage 79, Wisconsin Dells 75.66, Sauk Prairie 39.5

On the girls side, sophomore Emily Haines didn’t top either of the records she set at last year’s meet but still easily won both the long jump (16-1) and triple jump (34-10), where she led a one-two Tomah finish; Katelynn Elsing was second with a mark of 28-10 1/2.

Haines also won the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds.

Tomah’s only other individual winner was Audrey Knutson, who won the high jump by clearing 4-6. The Timberwolves’ only other second-place finisher was Chloe Shmays, who ran the 100 hurdles in 19.2 seconds.

Team scores: Wisconsin Dells 181.5, Baraboo 144.5, Tomah 111, Reedsburg 78, Monona Grove 67, Portage 34, Sauk Prairie 19.
