SPARTA - A Monroe County man was listed in critical condition at a Rochester, Minn., hospital Wednesday after being shot Monday evening at a Sparta area home.

David D. Wohlhoefer, 42, was injured about 7:18 p.m. at 11911 Grandview Ave. in the town of Angelo, said Monroe County Sheriff Dennis Pedersen.

Wohlhoefer was taken to Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in Sparta, then transferred to a Rochester hospital. A spokeswoman for Mayo Clinic would not confirm which hospital but said Wohlhoefer was in critical condition.

Pedersen said authorities are “quite a ways into their investigation” but still trying to piece together how Wohlhoefer was shot.

“There’s a possibility it was (self-inflicted), but we don’t know if it was intentional or accidental and we want to exclude the possibility a second party was involved as well,” Pedersen said.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
