A house fire in the town of Byron claimed the life of an the elderly woman on Sunday morning.
The Oakdale Fire Department was called to a fire in a two-story home just before 6 a.m., Oakdale Fire Chief Gordon Fick said, and the upper level of the house was totally engulfed in fire when they arrived on the scene.
The fire was put out around 9 a.m., and five members of the Fire Department, including Fick, stayed on the scene with the State Fire Marshal until 2 p.m. The house is a total loss.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family. One man escaped the fire.
In addition to the Oakdale Fire Department, the Oakdale First Responders, Tomah Ambulance Service and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the scene.
The fire remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and the State Fire Marshal.
