Over six inches of rain fell as storms and heavy rains pounded the Tomah area on Thursday and into Friday morning resulting in flooding, downed trees and power outages.

A storm producing heavy rain and winds swept through Tomah around 4 p.m. Thursday. The storm knocked down several trees, and Oakdale Electric power experienced outages due to the wind. Trees were reported down at Winnebago, Gillette, and Butts Parks, as well as Hiawatha Golf Course and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

Another band of storms and rain moved through the area overnight Thursday, into Friday morning. Rain totals of 6.75 inches were reported. Several roads, homes and businesses experienced flooding. At the City of Tomah Waste Water Treatment Plant, wastewater operator Brandy Leis said that several lift stations are running full time, but no problems have occurred.

The heavy rains likely will give way to hot and humid air moving up from the south on swift winds that could result in potentially dangerous heat indices today.

The high is expected to top out around 90 degrees, while dew points will climb into the 70s, making it feel like 95 to 100, according to the National Weather Service.
