Winnebago Wednesday will add “Give Back Day” for American troops to its July 23 program.

The Parent Advisory Board of Family Resources, which sponsors the Winnebago Wednesday program, will collect various personal items needed by military personnel serving tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan from 9 a.m.-noon at Winnebago Park in Tomah.

Julee Graber, site coordinator for Family Resources, said dropping off items is easy.

“People can just drop things off,” Graber said. “They don’t even have to get out of their cars.”

Graber said the Parent Advisory Board was motivated by the number of participating families with a member serving abroad. One parent is currently serving in Iraq.

“We have a lot of parents with family members in the military,” Graber said.

The following items are sought: Baby wipes, batteries (AA, AAA), beef jerky, body powder, candy and gum, cards/letters of encouragement, chapstick (SPF 15), crossword puzzles, dental floss, deodorant, DVDs, feminine products, foot powder, greeting cards, microwave popcorn, on-the-go pack (to flavor bottled water), pads of paper, pens and pencils, Pringles potato chips, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, trail mix, shampoo, small hand-held games and sunscreen.

The group is also accepting checks to help pay for shipping costs.

Graber said people who can’t come to Winnebago Park on Wednesday can call 374-4190 to arrange to have items picked up.

Winnebago Wednesday is a program for preschool children and their parents. It runs through Aug. 13, and there is a different activity planned for the children and parents every week. All arts and crafts made by children on July 23 will also be sent to the soldiers.

Parents who participate are required to stay with their children during Winnebago Wednesdays.

“If you’re new to the community, it’s a way to meet other parents and learn about Tomah,” Graber said.

Lunch is served at 11 a.m. for all who attend.

" I have a daughter that spent three yrs in Iraq, this event is not about politics, it isn't about war, it isn't an election or a debate of any type. Kudo's to whom ever thought this up and the organizer(s) thereof, forget your political beliefs..it isn't about those of you who choose to use this situation to express your whinnie concerns..those of you doing the naysaying, tongue clicking&tsking..some of the people in the military went in for education purposes to better themselves, perhaps they came from a family with few resources..whatever the reason..just stop complaining, reach into your pocket and give. " I think this is a great thing to do for the troops overseas. I can tell you, that it gives you a good feeling when people send packages and letters even when your not overseas.

" Comment for Parent Advisory Member - RE Cheese for the wine.

Great away to state it!! Too many people in this town don't see just how much it means to military members, current and past, to be supported by their community.

Thanks for all you do!! "

" Please, let's keep this a positive event. Once again Give Back Day is not about the war, it is about people. Regardless of one's belief in the war, we still need to show our support to the troops. We are simply letting the troops know that they are in our thoughts, while showing children how to give back and how they can make a difference. You can read in the previous comment that small gestures like this are very much appreciated. Remember these troops are our family, neighbors, co-workers, friends, etc. If we can make just one troop feel "more like home" then Give Back Day will be a success. I hope to see all of you on Wednesday! "

Please Support This wrote on Jul 18, 2008 12:21 AM:

" What a wonderful thing they're doing. When I was over there it was always great to get care packages like this. Everytime there was a box for us I felt like a five year old on Christmas morning. Please do whatever you can to support this. The troops have certainly earned that much. "

" Who's doing the whining? Let's tell it like it is. The more they feel like ...home the more it will become home. Let's bring 'em back to their real home. "

" People like you, I tell ya. Whine about things, but don't take any action yourself. Mock everyone else, but don't open yourself up to the same type of judgement.

You have your opinions but not the stones to act on them. Our troops are over there doing a difficult job. Whether you agree with it or not, that's the situation.

Now, an opportunity comes up to take part in a small effort to improve the quality of life for the soldiers in Iraq, and you just see it as an chance to get up on your soapbox.

It's particularly important since this is an event for preschool age kids. I'm glad they're getting a positive example regarding the things they can do to help other people, rather than a lesson in whining from people like you. "

" The reason these items are being collected is to help the soldiers feel a little more at "home" They are putting their lives on the line, regardless whether you believe in the war, they are following in our founders foot steps and are the reason we have freedom. So by dropping off rice crispy treats and foot powder is the least any of us can do! "

Parent Advisory Member wrote on Jul 15, 2008 12:40 PM:

" Give Back Day is about supporting our troops. It has nothing to do with support for or against the war. It is all about the troops. We are trying to make their day a little brighter by sending them cards and supplies. We are also trying to show the children how they can give back to others. We live in a military community and here is one way we can support the military families in this community. "

" Candy, gum, games? I thought our military was
the best supplied in the world? What's "really needed" is a one way ticket home! "
