A month ago, Tomah High School girls golf didn’t have enough competitors for a complete team.

Now, it’s possible Tomah could find a way to finish ahead of at least one school in the Mississippi Valley Conference season standings.

Tomah finished just four strokes behind La Crosse Aquinas as the five MVC schools gathered for the league’s second match of the season at La Crosse’s Forest Hills Golf Club.

The Timberwolves can tie Aquinas for fourth place by finishing ahead of the Blugolds in three of the next four matches. If the Timberwolves finish ahead of Aquinas in all four matches, they would grab sole possession of fourth.

Tomah was led by Brianna Francis, whose 9-hole score of 49 tied for fifth place. Nine of the meet’s 27 golfers shot between 49 and 52.

Shelby Hoeft was next with a 54, and freshman Megan McGinnis came through with her best score of the season at 55.

Megan Kennedy-Pierce made her first varsity appearance of the season and shot a 75. She injured her elbow two days before the season began and would have started the season as the Timberwolves’ number-three varsity golfer.

Team scores: Onalaska 179, Holmen 191, La Crosse Central/La Crosse Logan 206, La Crosse Aquinas 229, Tomah 233.

Onalaska sophomore Alli Path was the meet medalist with a 36. Holmen’s Christina DeBoer was next at 39.

The Timberwolves compete at the non-conference Arcadia Invitational Sept. 18.

" EXCELLENT! Now you're crabbing at each other about GOLF! First we got you to run the basketball coach out, then a softball coach, pretty soon you will decide the golf coach is incompetent and I hope the football coach comes soon. How is that basketball coach search coming, by the way? Keep it up Tomah we all appreciate a couple of sure wins every season. "

" nobody is crowning anybody state champs. I got the point of the bright future blog. Parental involvement in their kids activities.
Its the negative bloggers like you that bring down the kids.
Thse young kids need pats on the back, not someone like you, telling them they aren't going anywhere. "

" They are 7th and 8th graders. I have been following Tomah sports for almost fifty years. Here is ONE constant that I hear almost every year. Some parents of young atheletes saying "Wait until they get to the HS, then things will change." But they almost never do. Some of the best, undefeated teams at the lower levels never even win a game at the high school level. It's been that way for many, many years so please don't crown them State champions just yet. "

" It means PARENTS are involved with their kids helping them with improving themselves and maybe it just means they are better athletes. "

" We have girls in 7th and 8th grade that are posting better scores than the varsity. Just give it some time. "
