Tomah took down the defending Mississippi Valley Conference champion, and it wasn’t a fluke.

The Timberwolves won every match except number-one singles and handed La Crosse Central a 6-1 defeat Thursday at Tomah High School.

The win was part of a busy week in which Tomah split a pair of non-conference duals and suffered its first MVC loss of the season to Onalaska. The match was began on Sept. 4 and was completed Friday.

The Timberwolves emerged from the four-day stretch with an 8-2 overall record and 2-1 MVC mark.

The Central match was a little closer than the 6-1 score indicated. Both of Tomah’s doubles victories came in three sets, and the number-three doubles match was tied at one set each before Central suffered an injury default.

Still, the victory puts Tomah in very good position to finish in the upper half of the MVC standings. Tomah has already clinched a winning dual season.

Tomah lost to Marshfield 7-0 Monday in a match where the Timberwolves lost every matchup in straight sets.

A day later, Tomah defeated Mauston, 7-0, but needed two third-set tiebreakers to nail down the shutout. Angie Gasser won a marathon match over Bri Huebner, while Chloe Jilek bounced back from a first-set loss against Becca Murphy to gain a victory in her first varsity singles match of the season.
