La Crosse Logan’s Michelle Mueller is a dominant volleyball player, but the Tomah Timberwolves couldn’t take advantage of her time away from the net.
Mueller dominated the latter stages of the match and led Logan to a 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 Mississippi Valley Conference win over the Timberwolves Tuesday at Tomah High School.
“She’s the real deal,” Tomah coach Greg Bever said of Mueller. “When she’s on the front row, she dominates at the net. I told our girls when she’s on the back row, we have to make hay, but we didn’t do it. We had too many unforced errors.”
Mueller saved her best for the fourth game. During a stretch when Logan extended an 11-10 lead to 21-12, Mueller unloaded with five spike kills and one tip kill.
Mueller didn’t do much in the first game. That, combined with four Logan service errors, gave Tomah an opening in a game in which neither team ever led by more than two points.
Tomah scored the game’s last three points on Brandi Patterman’s kill, a Logan hitting error and Erin Dechant’s spike that Logan couldn’t control.
The two teams exchanged big runs in the second game. Logan got off to a 3-0 lead and extended its advantage to 14-6 before Tomah rallied. Michelle Luebke served six straight winners, including two service aces, that gave Tomah a 16-15 lead. The Rangers, however, regained control with three straight points and were never threatened after that.
In the third game, Logan moved out to a 5-0 lead, but Tomah tied the game with a 5-0 run that included two service aces by Katie Murphy.
