Both Tomah High School cross country teams finished fifth at the Gale Johnson Invitational Saturday at Onalaska.

Derek Storkel won the boys race with a time of 15 minutes, 53 seconds. He was 58 seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer.

Jesse Parker was next for Tomah in 19:27. He finished 30th out of 101 varsity and junior varsity runners.

Coach Bruce Luebke is pleased with the progress of the boys team.

“They’re coming along nicely,” Luebke said. “We’re getting better as a team each meet. They’re looking forward to continuing that improvement all the way to (the) conference (meet).”

Team scores: Onalaska 46, Holmen 64, West Salem 66, La Crosse Aquinas 66, Tomah 131, Onalaska Luther 158.

Haleigh Flottmeyer led the Tomah girls.. She finished 22nd out of 88 runners with a time of 17:09. Tara Lamb was next at 19:09.

While Flottmeyer and Lamb have been Tomah’s top two runners, the remaining spots have changed from race to race.

“We’re seeing some competition for the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh spots, which is good,” Luebke said.

Team scores: Onalaska 26, Holmen 61, West Salem 66, La Crosse Aquinas 96, Tomah 158, Onalaska Luther 164.

Saturday, Tomah competes in the Brookwood Invitational. The first race begins at 9 a.m.

" I have always thought that to run cross country you have to be a "little off."
After watching these kids run it made me change my mind, this activity will reap benefits for these kids in the long run, health wise as they get older and will help them to stay in shape.
Kudus to you guys and gals, your dedication to running, in the long run is an setting a good example to those who will follow you on future teams. "
