LA CROSSE -- With the score tied 0-0 at halftime Friday, it was likely that a big defensive play would turn the tide in the second half.
La Crosse Logan was the team that made it.
Ben Devine’s 39-yard interception return for a touchdown less than two minutes into the third quarter snapped a scoreless tie and ignited Logan’s 21-6 victory over Tomah at Logan High School’s Swanson Field.
It was Tomah’s first MVC loss of the season.
Tomah got the better of the first half, outgaining Logan, 121-48, but Devine’s interception return was a bad omen for the Timberwolves after intermission.
The Timberwolves’ Willie Nicksic returned opening kickoff of the second half to his own 30, but two running plays went nowhere. Facing a 3rd-and-11 from the 29, Timberwolves’ quarterback Dustin Burkwalt rolled to his left and threw a pass over the middle. Devine stepped in for the pick, cut to his right and rambled 39 yards for the score.
Hannah Reiland booted the extra point for a 7-0 Logan lead.
Tomah responded with its only scoring drive of the night. The Timberwolves returned the kickoff to their own 24 and kept the drive alive when tailback Joel Sweeney busted off a 16-yard run on 4th-and-2 to the Rangers’ 24.
Two plays later, Sweeney got around the right end and beat the Logan secondary to the end zone to cap the 10-play drive. The extra point was blocked, and Tomah trailed, 7-6, with 5:56 left in the third quarter.
Logan countered with an equally time-consuming scoring drive. The Rangers marched 63 yards in 10 plays and scored when Trent Jorgensen pushed through a quarterback sneak inches from the goal line on the first play of the fourth quarter. Reiland’s extra point made it 14-6.
The Rangers got the ball back less than a minute later on another Devine interception at the Tomah 34. Three plays later, tailback Damian Guggenbuehl scored a touchdown from 11 yards out. Reiland’s extra point extended the lead to 21-6 with 10:02 left.
Neither of Tomah’s next two possessions produced a first down, and the Timberwolves generated just 19 yards of offense in the fourth quarter.
Tomah had two drives deep into Logan territory, but neither ended with points. The first one got to the Logan 8 but ended with a missed field goal. The Timberwolves took another possession to the Logan 17, but two straight incomplete passes for the Timberwolves to turn the ball over on downs.
Sweeney finished with 112 yards rushing in 21 attempts. It was third time Sweeney topped the 100-yard mark.
