The Tomah High School boys soccer team still has a shot at a Mississippi Valley Conference championship.

Tomah drew to within a half-game of the league leaders by beating La Crosse Central, 3-0, Tuesday at Veteran’s Field.

It was Tomah’s last regular-season home game, although the result pretty much assures the Timberwolves will get at least one home match when the MVC tournament starts Oct. 7.

The Timberwolves improved to 3-1-1 in the MVC, a half-game behind league leaders La Crosse Central and Sparta, both of which are 4-1. The win over Logan sets up a big game at Sparta Tuesday.

“We’ve got a chance to finish second or first if we beat Sparta,” Tomah coach Scott Conzemius said. “We’re looking forward to going there and making a game of it.”

Tomah scored all three of its goals in the first 25 minutes against Logan, and most of the game was played in the Tomah attacking zone.

Aron Haun scored Tomah’s first goal when he jumped on a loose ball and tucked a looping 20-foot shot into the upper corner of the net.

In the 23rd minute, Matt Ferry flew in from the left side and pounded a short shot past the goalkeeper for a 2-0 Tomah advantage.

Just two minutes later, Kevin Betthauser launched a centering pass that Ian Duncan headed into the goalkeeper’s chest. The goalkeeper couldn’t field it cleanly, and the ball fell behind him into the net for a 3-0 Tomah lead.

The Timberwolves dominated the match after that even though they didn’t score any more goals. Kevin Waltemath made two saves in the first 24 minutes and made just one more in the final 56.

Conzemius was once again pleased with his team’s balance on offense.

“Everyone is a threat to score, and teams have to respect that,” Conzemius said. “You can’t focus on just one guy.”

Three days earlier, Tomah traveled to the D.C. Everest Invitational and split a pair of contests. Tomah defeated Mosinee, 4-0, before losing to Oshkosh North, 4-0.

The loss to Oshkosh North snapped a six-game winning streak. The Timberwolves emerged from the three matches with a 7-2-1 overall record.
