" The biggest problem is that Ed got great advice from a lot of people but chose to ignore it and still kept running the whole place like a campground instead of a hotel.
He was continually giving things away for promotion, instead of actually promoting the resort, and he never really understood how to maintain an operation of this size.
Cranfest will go on, with or without the resort. But they probably won't be able to make it work unless the new owners, whoever they may be, know something about the resort business. It will still take an influx of money to bring the place up to standards, as they built it, but cheaped out on a lot of the fine points that tourists will compare with other places like it in our state.
The place is over for now...toast, taillights. What I worry about is who is keeping up the utilities and making sure the place doesn't sustain damage from vandals, freezing, the elements, etc. "

" We have been going to Jellystone for the past 15 years as a group of up to 12 families each July. It is a great place to go and relax. There was always so much to do for our kids, they were never bored!! This past July it was just not the same. Much quieter and not as busy. We had all put our down payments in February, 2008 for next year 2009 villas. This year we all cancelled in July and we are still fighting to get our money back. I got my money back because I did a dispute with my credit card company. They kept almost $2500.00 of our money for reservations for 2009. If you paid in advance by credit card and "cancelled" future reservations before they closed their door and are still waiting for your refund, do a dispute with your credit card company so that they can help get it back for you. We really loved this place, but, way toooo much tooo fast, greed gets you nowhere!!!! He should have stopped after building half of the villas and Three Bears Lodge and paid them off, and years down the line built one by one as you can afford them. You should not get to keep everyone's reservation money and then close up!!!!! I got mine back because my credit card company fought for me. My sisters were not so lucky as they paid by check, will they ever see a refund? We cancelled on July 31, 2008 and they are still waiting!!!!! It is just toooo bad it had to close and people are all so hurt by this, no job, no refunds, no villa to go to and enjoy, no etc.... "

Is Monroe county supposed to feel sorry for me and BAIL me out??? WHATEVER! Jellystone can sit empty for all I care, I just feel bad for everyone that lost their jobs because of Eds stupidity, one being my sister! Well, I hear Arby's is hiring.. "

" We started going to jellystone three years ago. It was a great camp resort. My kids loved and lived at that awseome skatepark. It was so nice to have so many different amenties at the resort with the waterparks, skatepark, activites and music at night.
Our first year we satyed there which was 3 years ago. They were in the process of building so many...I think to many villa's. The last time we were there was the middle of august this year. We diffently saw a difference in the resort. We had not heard about there financial disaster. What we noticed from previous stays was the service sucked. The staff people who were working short were extremly rude to their customers. Now I know why, they were mad about this fiancial situtation and the fact that the cutt half there working staff. This left them angry, rude, stressed and just mainly peed off. We did notice that villa's that were being built 3 years ago when we were there still weren't finished with the construction. That was a good clue that something was going on.
I feel as though the owner bit off way more than he could chew and at such a fast rate.
It's to bad the resrt is beautiful and it was a great place to vaction my kids are extremely dissappointed about the shut down of the resort.
I belive the owners of the villa's really can't place blame on moroe county or even the resort owner. Purchasing a villa for an investment is not something I would have done. You have to put alot of hope and trust that the resort will do well and how many people can guarntee that. It's basically a game of risk. Villa owners can't blame this on anyone but them selves for making a very bad..life changing descion that is now going to ruin everything they have. Some people are loosing their only home but some of the villa owners are loosing more homes but that could have been helped if they wouldn't have made a abd descion to make such a huge purchase to make money. Well your not making money now are you??...your loosing everything you have because of an unneeded purchase. Alot of the villa owners who have money ( well HAD money)and even bought 5 villas. What the heck were you thinking. you were thinking about throwing money around to make money but that blew up in your faces. To me thats not a very smart business man...it's a very stupid business man.
Next time you want to drop 1.5 million dollars put it to a good cause. Give money to charity, church, local families who really need the money..help out and support your local community. There are so many good ways to spend your money on...like all these I mentioned. But now you threw 1.5 million dollars away to the villa's and your losing it. you don't lose money when you could have done the things I mentioned. The problem is your extremely greedy. who in the hell would buy 5 villa's at 1.5 million dollars well I guess Paris would. Paris stop looking at money signs.I can't feel sorry for you one bit .you did this yourself so don't be pointing fingers at anyone but yourself. "

It's time for investors big and small alike to take responsibility for their actions. If that means a ghetto in the former Jellystone, then so be it. To answer your question, we would have investors that didn't risk money they couldn't afford to lose if we don't bail them out. An expensive lesson, yes, but worth every penny! "

I am not about to go into debt for someone else's mistake fueled by greed. I swear, debt is going to be the downfall of the country. BOTH of our candidates for President offer tax proposals that stand to put this country TRILLIONS of dollars more into debt. And we thought the 10 TRILLION dollar mark we just surpassed on 10-1-08 was bad. "

" I agree with the previous comment. A summer lodge north of the Dells in a rural area. The only reason I or my family visits the Warrens area is to walk the isles at Cranfest looking for the eye catching craft and eating the many different foods. The Three Bears Lodge is beautiful but the Dells area is closer and has more to offer. My family frequents the huge indoor water park right off the freeway. No need to drive another 45 minutes. It's too bad. As for the man that bought the villas. Never invest in something you can't afford on your own if the deal went sour. Those deals are always too good to be true! "
Should have seen it coming wrote on Oct 1, 2008 1:32 PM:
" Looking at the rapid expansion that Jellystone has made over the years, it easy to foresee that cash flow problems would occur. This resort was doomed to fail with a high debt load because it is predominantly a summer only (with the exception of the hotel) attraction. Combine that with a rural location and you've got a recipe for disaster. Add in extremely high prices (that most locals can't afford) and now you've limited your market to those from out of town. I'm surprised that no one said, gee, if gas prices keep going up or we have a recession how are we going to keep our attendance high enough to cover our costs? When your target market is those over 100 miles away and have to plan conservatively. "

" Two people from out of state with investments too good to be true. Now they want us to bail them out. Now, let me educate "Tomah Taxpayer". Monroe county did not foreclose on the resort a bank did and for good reason. Next, if Monroe County were to bail them all out you would be paying for it. At the moment there is over $600,000.00 in unpaid taxes on property in that area and that was just the second half payment. Furthermore, if the assessor were to ILLEGALLY lower their value your tax bill would go up to make up the difference and most of that property is not worth half of what it was on January 1st. THE ASSESSOR DID THE RIGHT THING. As a Tomah Taxpayer you don't wan't him to lower those values until he has to. Finally if there is no buyer found for the resort and they do a reassessment next year to bring things in line with true values as of January 1st 2009 your 2009 taxes will SKYROCKET. In Warrens it would be even worse. "

The residences of Warrens have homes that may sell for pennies on dollar now too! With the debt burden and the decline in home values nation wide, Warrens residents are in a bad situation too! These are primary homes in Warrens, not luxurious investments meant to make the wealthy, wealthier. My home assessment went up $10K, not much to you, but to a person below poverty level it could mean foreclosure on my one and only home!! It's too bad you may lose your investment, I may lose my home! Warrens has done too much for Jellystone and can not do anymore. "
