Tomah can't stop Sparta's big hitters

It was match that Sparta won more than Tomah lost.

Sparta made the big hits during the decisive runs and defeated Tomah, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match Thursday at Tomah High School.

Tomah coach Greg Bever said it was one of his team’s best efforts and hopes it carries over into Tomah’s final three matches.

“If we play like this against Holmen, (La Crosse) Central and (La Crosse) Logan, we should win all three of them, but we have to build on what we did tonight,” Bever said.

During the key stretches, it was Sparta’s hitting power that fueled the Spartans’ rallies. Tomah had taken a 19-14 lead in the first game before Sparta ended the match with an 11-3 run. Eight of those 11 points were kills.

In the second game, the Timberwolves took a 9-4 lead on a Samantha Stutzman kill before Sparta scored the next seven points. The run consisted of five spikes and one block and just one unforced Timberwolves’ error.

Sparta zoomed out to an 11-4 lead in the third game, but Tomah fought back to within 18-17 after consecutive Brandi Patterman spikes and a kill from Michelle Luebke. Sparta responded with the game’s next six points and finally ended the match when Haylee Kirking ripped a spike off a double-block attempt.

Bever acknowledged that Sparta has a powerful set of hitters but said his team needed to generate more pressure so that Sparta’s setters couldn’t serve up big spikes.

“A lot of their runs came when we didn’t pass the ball well and let them get a good hit,” Bever said. “They’re just too good to give them free balls like that.”

The Timberwolves got a boost from Stutzman and Ally Von Haden. Bever inserted them in the starting lineup, and Stutzman responded with eight digs, while Von Haden led the Timberwolves in kills with six and contributed five digs.

“They deserved an opportunity to start by the way they performed in practice, and both of them stepped up for us tonight,” Bever said.

Luebke led the setters with 13 assists. Brooke Von Haden contributed three kills and nine digs, while Ariel Nauman had two kills, six assists and six digs.

Junior setter Aleatra Nading led the Sparta effort with 26 assists and 13 digs.

Abby Kiefer added nine kills for the Spartans, who have won five straight MVC matches after getting off to a 1-4 start.

Over the hill and over weight wannibies who still think they can play.
Its more like watching a comedy routine than a sport. "

" Those that play football will never play again, and as the years go by, will sit and watch others play, and remember how they used to play. Those that play volleyball will always have a game to play, anywhere, anytime, and will stand ready to play another day, and will never have to daydream about how they used to play. Those who still can- play volleyball, all year round! Those who can't- play fantasy football on their PC's and laze around with NFL on FOX! Enjoy you buffalo wings! "

" Last time I checked there are 11 players on offense and 11 on defense playing at a time on a football team.
Any one player not playing, especially in a school the size of tomah, shouldn't matter.
The team has to "kick it up a notch" in the absence of any player. One person doesn't make a team no matter how good you think he is. "

" I agree 100%. And just think what they would be if that Flock girl hadn't gotten hurt. I saw her last year as a junior. Would have been in the running for MVP of the conference this year. We are not even close to them. "

A long ways to go wrote on Oct 7, 2008 7:46 AM:

" Sparta has a powerful "set" of hitters? I saw four or five Sparta hitters more powerful than us. They can go to almost anyone on the court and get a powerful hit. AND on top of that they are YOUNG. Only one Senior that I could see. Plus their other teams beat our teams using younger players on those levels. We have a lot of work to do to get to their level of play. "
