In a Mississippi Valley Conference football season where anything can happen at any time, Friday’s game between Tomah and Onalaska fit the pattern.

Right up until the improbable final 11 seconds.

Onalaska survived a missed field goal attempt on the final play and emerged with a wild 30-28 victory over the Timberwolves at Onalaska High School.

The loss dropped Tomah’s MVC record to 2-2 and made the Timberwolves’ path to the WIAA playoffs considerably more difficult. Tomah faces a La Crosse Aquinas team Friday that has smoked its last two opponents by a combined 92-7 score.

The Hilltoppers appeared to ready to put the game away after stuffing a Tomah 4th-and-1 attempt at the Onalaska 26-yard line with three minutes left. Onalaska pushed the ball to midfield and faced a 4th-and-2 at midfield with 11 seconds remaining.

Onalaska elected to punt, a decision that nearly proved disastrous when Amadeus Gandy burst through and blocked the kick. Willy Nicksic was almost able to scoop up the loose ball, but he was hit from behind, and the ball rolled out of bounds at the 25 with three seconds left.

Tomah coach Brad Plueger elected to try a game-winning field goal from 42 yards, but the snap was high, and Clayton Barrix’s low, rushed kick was partially blocked to end the game.

The Timberwolves led, 21-17, at halftime and appeared to be in control early in the second half. T.J. Hove returned the opening kickoff of the second half 60 yards to the Onalaska 36, and Tomah launched a 6-play drive capped by tailback Joel Sweeney’s 11-yard sweep around the left end. Barrix added the extra point to give Tomah a 28-17 lead with 9:22 left in the third quarter.

Key turnover

Onalaska’s next possession was a three-and-out, but the Hilltoppers got a huge break when they recovered a muffed punt. It took just two plays for Onalaska to drive 20 yards and get right back into the contest.

Tomah’s offense still generated six first downs over the final 18 minutes, but the Hilltoppers did an effective job of keeping the Timberwolves from busting any big plays. During that span, Tomah’s longest play from scrimmage was 14 yards.

Turnovers led to scores for both teams in the first half. A fumble on Tomah’s first possession set up Onalaska’s first touchdown, but Tomah came right back with an 11-yard touchdown run by fullback Ross Lynch to tie the game at 7-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Josh Von Haden levelled Onalaska returner Drew Markworth, and Dustin Burkwalt fell on the loose ball at the Onalaska 20. Four plays later, Tomah quarterback Tyler Von Haden threw his first touchdown pass as a varsity quarterback to wide receiver Rhett Monroe on a 21-yard strike.

" Why don't they go after Larry Terry?
If UWL goes without a victory this season lacrosse will want him out and coach terry will be a good fit in tomah. "

" Coach Rose and Coach Buswell are working on getting Barry here next year please do not take their focus off that task as the Police Station is nearing completion and he should beable to focus only on the football position . By the way gentleman have you counted how many coaching positions are open in both middle school and high school?? Maybe it is time to step up and show your talent that you think you have or had but either way we need coaches you both run your own businesses so you can set your own hours.I think Buswell doing gymnastics would be pretty funny don't thr rst of you too?? "

" My name is Ray Monroe and I am Rhett's dad. I believe if I am going to write something I should attach my name. No parent, student or fan should ever say anything negative about the players. These boys are busting their butts on the field every day and night. This goes for comments at the game as well. Its funny how fast people fall off the bandwagon! As for the coaches, these are the same guys that made us 6-0 in conferece last year. I may not agree with them all the time but they are the coaches and you have to trust them to do their best as well. Be positive and enjoy this time in our boys lives! I know I am regardless of their record. "

" Being a ex tomah fan you already know that tomah people-not just fans or parents of players have always stuck their noses into the coaches business hampering them into doing their jobs. Its been that way for over 50 years and now we are getting 2nd and in some cases 3rd generation "off the field coaches" who think they know more than the coaches.
I recall a basketball coach in tomah, some years ago refer to these people as the "downtown quarterbacks"
Nothing has changed since then. "

" Thank God for you Tomah folks! You make it easier to get through the season. If it weren't for wrestling (which you seem by nature to be good at -- look at these blogs!) we could count on 2 wins per sport per season. It is as if you are an alternate race that like to eat its young! "

" What is the matter with all of you in Tomah? Do you have nothing better to do than go on a web site and make rude and mean comments about other people? YOU are the reason TOMAH sports have taken a tanker. Thos kids try so hard and and coachs put in such long hours. IF YOU think you can do a better job then you should put in some extra time and hard work and go help them out instead of complaining. "

" DO NOT start ripping kids on this sight. Mentioning names and saying that a kid is not good enough right now? He is so happy to be taking the snaps right now, I hope he doesn't read this website because of people like YOU who rip on them anonymously!!! You want to rip a kid, tell us your name.

Same as the O line, they worked their tails off to get there. So they aren't as good as YOUR standards, boo hoo.

And who are you to name Tomah's problems. You think the coaches don't know what their other weapons are? They see them in practice everyday.

And you also named a few guys that don't even play offense. Go to a game and pay attention, don't just watch. "

" EJ McKean field wasn't submitted to the WIAA as a football playoff site. Was this an oversight of the AD, or did he know something about the tomah football season ahead of time? "

Fann wrote on Oct 8, 2008 6:01 PM:

" Yea sweeney is a MAJOR factor into tomahs success but there are other weapons on offense(ie: rhett, big john, butterfuss, hove, willy, etc.)...Tomah's problem is gettin the ball to those other weapons...They dont have an expericenced quarterback that can get the ball to the other weapons with the loss of zahrte last year, and the o-line isnt as big or as good as last year so its makes it alot harder to invlove everybody. with vonhaden at qb right now they dont have a huge opportunity to make the playoffs but in a few years with more experience they could be good. "

Fan wrote on Oct 8, 2008 3:34 PM:

" Im sorry, let me apoligize
I was not disking Sweeney, he's is a great football player! Lets just start giving credit to ALL the football player, they are a great bunch of kids and it takes a team to win the ball game. Willie is one kid to me that stands out every game that I've been able to attend and
is out there ready to play, have you ever seen that kid hit?? Wow, for being a little guy, he sure can play the game.
Good Luck Tomah!! "

" Sweeney,Sweeney,Sweeney
is there any other player on the Tomah team???
I'm not saying Sweeney isnt a good football player, but come on!! Friday nights game could have been won if the coaches would have in the fourth quater have someone other than SWEENEY run the ball!! Its a shame that some of the other players don't get any credit for what they do! Rhet,John,Willie,Ross,TJ,Gandy brothers,Clayton (wow what a foot). I will say, even it your coaches don't,I'm very proud of all of you. Keep your heads up and drive on. Your going to have a tough game on friday, you can do it!!! "

" Mr Rundio I know you are doing these games alone however could you please say the score more often I am unable to get to the games and would enjoy them on the radio more if you knew what was going on. Mr Hagen does a fine job and he is seeing the same things you are. The scoreboard must have been out for him to however he did not get confused could you also get the players names right their numbers don't change. Sorry to be so picky but for some of us that is our only way to get the game live you make it very confusing Maybe you should stick to writing. just please try to be accurate "
