The first annual Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer tournament will feature a very interesting rematch in the semifinal round.
Tomah forced a rematch with La Crosse Central after beating La Crosse Logan, 4-1, in a quarterfinal game Tuesday at Tomah’s Veteran’s Park Field.
The Timberwolves, 9-4-1 overall and seeded fourth in the seven-team tournament, advanced to the semifinals to face top-seeded La Crosse Central, which got a first-round bye. The match is tonight (Thursday), 7 p.m. at Fields for Kids in La Crosse.
Central suffered only one regular-season MVC loss, but it was a doozy -- a stunning 6-2 decision in which Tomah scored six goals in the first 30 minutes. Central outscored its other five MVC opponents by an 11-2 margin.
“I know it’s a sports cliche, but Central is going to want some payback,” Tomah coach Scott Conzemius said. “Nobody likes to lose, and nobody likes to lose the way Central lost against us.”
Tomah didn’t get off to the same kind of start against Logan, but the offense was still plenty potent, especially after the first half. Logan put a shot on goal against Timberwolves goalkeeper Kyle Waltemath just 33 seconds into the match, but Tomah dominated after that.
The Timberwolves finally broke through in the 32nd minute. After a Tomah throw-in, Ian Duncan slipped a pass to Jacob Dellamuth, who weaved his way through the Logan defense and put a short shot past the Rangers’ goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage.
“We came out flat in the first half, and we were lucky to be up 1-0 at halftime,” Conzemius said. “We stepped up play in the second half.”
Just five minutes into the second half, when a misty drizzle turned into a steady rain, Dellamuth jumped on a loose ball and fired a low crossing shot that skidded into the far left corner of the net for a 2-0 Timberwolves’ cushion.
Logan nearly scored a minute later when a wide open crossing shot was deflected out of bounds. Tomah cleared the ensuing corner kick and scored a short time later Matt Ferry took the ball down the left side and booted a low crossing pass that Dellamuth diverted into the net for Tomah’s third score.
