Derek Storkel got a credible challenge from La Crosse Logan’s Bobby Glofelty, but he still was in command of his home meet.
Storkel won his ninth race in nine attempts during Tuesday’s Timberwolf Classic at Hiawatha Golf Club.
Glofelty, a two-time state tournament runner, stayed within 19 seconds of Storkel and finished second. Storkel won the race in 16 minutes, 12 seconds. The two will meet again at Thursday’s Mississippi Valley Conference meet in Holmen.
“Derek was happy (Glofelty) was there,” Tomah coach Bruce Luebke said. “(Glofelty) is a good runner, and Derek wanted someone to push him. Derek was after the course record.”
Storkel shattered the course record of 16:21set two years ago by La Crosse Aquinas’ Zach Wilhelmy during the MVC meet.
Tomah’s next varsity runner was Jesse Parker. He completed the course in 19:19 and was 20th out of 33 runners.
The Timberwolves’ other varsity runners were: Michael Wilde (20:14), Kyle Laylan (20:42), Jacob Waddell (20:43), Mitch Rezin (20:55) and Chris Laylan (22:02).
Logan won the meet by taking five of the first eight places. Team scores: Logan 23, DeForest 51, Chippewa Falls 74, Tomah 107, New Lisbon 110.
On the junior varsity side, Reese Butterfuss was 14th out of 42 runners. He finished with a time of 20:19. Butterfuss was followed by Zach Humpal (21:40), Isaac Lind (21:53), Kevin Kirsch (22:01), Jacob Rezin (22:18), Skylar McCarthy (22:51), John Lanska (23:40) and Danny White (24:31).
Team scores in the jayvee race:
In the girls race, Tomah’s Haleigh Flottmeyer was third out of 21 runners. She travelled the 4,000-meter (2.5-mile) course in 16:26, and Luebke believes Flottmeyer is peaking at the right time.
“I think it was best race of the season,” Luebke said. “Everything has come together for her in the last couple of meets, and I think she’ll continue to run well.”
Flottmeyer was followed by teammates Tara Lamb (19:22), Ariel Scott (19:49), Amber Ingwell (20:07), Chloe Smays (20:37), Allison Coffey (20:47) and Hillary Byrum (20:48).
Chippewa Falls junior Jamie Bengsten won the race in 16:15.
Team scores: DeForest 27, Chippewa Falls 39, Tomah 65, New Lisbon incomplete.
Katie Elsing paced Tomah’s three runners in the junior varsity race. Elsing’s time was 20:38. Tomah’s other two jayvee runners were Kelsey Rose (21:59) and Cassandra Bogle (25:33).
DeForest and Chippewa Falls were the only two teams with complete jayvee squads. DeForest beat Chippewa Falls, 22-38.
Luebke is looking forward to the MVC meet. While Storkel is favored to win the boys race, Luebke is hoping for a good overall team effort. Both Tomah teams finished last in 2007, and Luebke is looking to move from the cellar.
“If we run really well as a team, I’m hoping we can move up a spot or two,” Luebke said, “but it will take a complete team effort. In cross country, you can’t win a meet with one dominant runner. It takes a total effort from everyone.”
