Letter: Substitute teachers aren’t ’inherently inferior’

After reading the past newspaper’s “Our Perspectives” on school day prep and year reform, I agree with most of the piece. However, being a retired school teacher of 30 plus years and having worked now for the Tomah School District the past four years as a sub, I feel you did us disservice. I feel we do a great job for someone getting a call at 6 a.m. to drop our day plans to cover a sick teacher’s classroom, also $100 per day is not expensive - ever take your car in for work? Most school districts pay this amount and many pay more.

I am not a retired math teacher, however even in this area, teachers leave great sub notes and we can get by pretty well.

As a Tomah substitute teacher, we have earned better press than you have published.

Dennis Bertolino,

Tomah

" I agree with Mr. Bertolino about substitute teachers. My wife and I have the pleasure of knowing many of the retired teachers as we do the regular teachers. BOTH are top notch and take pride in their work.
I would like to think the newspaper could find more important issues to write about. "
