Monday at La Crescent, seven players scored Tomah’s eight goals.

Thursday at home against La Crosse, five players scored Tomah’s six goals.

Balance is paying off for the Timberwolves.

Coach Todd Kirschbaum’s team won its third straight game Thursday by beating La Crosse Central/La Crosse Logan, 6-3, in a West Central Hockey Conference match at Mose Lamb Rink.

Tomah improved to 12-6-2 overall and 7-4-2 in the WCHC.

Although La Crosse managed to put 24 shots on goal, the Timberwolves were never really threatened.

La Crosse goaltender Nick Maharias stopped breakaway attempts from Zach Paulis and Greg Gerke in the first seven minutes, but his luck ran out during Tomah’s first power play. With the La Crosse penalty about to expire, Tomah won a faceoff in front of Maharias, and the puck skipped over to Brett Sweeney on the right wing. He cranked a hard shot, and Jacob Waddell crashed the net to push home the rebound for a 1-0 Tomah lead.

Twenty-four seconds before the end of the period, Mitch Szeflinski juked a defender at the blue line, skated toward the right of the net and slid a crossing pass to Joey Villacrez, who tucked the puck into a tight window in the upper lefthand corner of the net for a 2-0 Timberwolves’ advantage.

It went to 3-0 early in the third period. Just 10 seconds into a power play, Ethan Hubert fed a wide-open Jordy Pierce, who cranked an uncontested shot from the right wing that whizzed past Maharias.

La Crosse got its first goal just 70 seconds later, and Tomah had to burn off 30 seconds of La Crosse’s 5-on-3 power play midway through the period.

Tomah’s lead went back to three goals when a scramble in front of the net left Maharias out of position, and Cliff Bartholomew flicked the puck into a wide open net.

Less than two minutes later, Maharias stuffed a Gerke breakaway attempt, but Gerke tracked down the loose puck behind the net, wheeled back in front of Maharias and beat him from point-blank range for a 5-1 Tomah lead.

Szeflinski rounded out Tomah’s scoring in the third period with a power-play goal assisted by Hubert and Pierce.

Tomah finished with 42 shots on goal.

The Timberwolves wrap up the regular season Tuesday with a trip to Holmen/La Crosse Aquinas/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau.
