A 19-year-old Holmen man faces charges of felony physical abuse of a child, battery and disorderly conduct following an early morning disturbance Monday at the Holiday Inn.

Norwalk man charged with OWI (2009/10/21)
Richard Schmitz, 49, of Norwalk, was arrested by the Sparta Police Department for Operating While Under the Influence after he drove around officers directing traffic at the scene of a house fire. At approximately 11:35 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, officers had portions of Wisconsin Street in Sparta closed off while the Sparta Fire Department battled a house fire at 319 W. Wisconsin St. A pickup truck being driven by Schmitz drove past officers and over several fire hoses, almost striking a Sparta police officer and the fire chief. The man was stopped and ultimately arrested for OWI. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail and will likely make a court appearance later today (Tuesday). Several other traffic citations related to the incident have also been issued.
